Chess 101 for adults

An introduction to chess that'll have you playing in an hour. How the pieces move & capture, check/checkmate/stalemate, castling and en passant, and basic opening principles. 

After class, visit the café downstairs to practice what you learned. Chess club happens every Wednesday (and Tuesday, and Friday) from 5 to 9. 

This class is held once a month on Wednesdays. Registration is free, but participants must sign up in advance.

Class will be held upstairs in the Kamp's 1910 building at 10 NE 10th Street in downtown Oklahoma City. Chess sets are provided. No outside food or drink may be brought into the building, but feel free to come early and grab something from the downstairs café. Chess club will be going on there between 5 and 9, so plan to stay and practice what you learned.

Private coaching is available for adults and for youths age 7 and older, from absolute beginner to 1600 USCF. If you're interested, submit the form below so we can match you with the right coach at a time that works for your schedule.

Private lessons must be prepaid. You may cancel or a lesson up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time and receive a full refund. Packages are nonrefundable.

 

Lessons purchased as part of a package must be taken within 45 days.

 

Lessons may be rescheduled up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time without penalty and are subject to instructor availability. 

 

Late arrivals and no-shows

Coaches will wait up to 15 minutes for late arrivals. After that time, the lesson will be considered a no-show. Lessons that begin 15+ minutes after the scheduled start time will still end at the originally scheduled time.

All Oklahoma City Chess Club events (including tournaments, classes, private lessons, and club meetups) are run in accordance with US Chess Safe Play policies. Bullying/harassment of any kind is not tolerated. Our goal is to maintain a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for all players. If your experience falls short of that goal for any reason, please tell us.
